What is the problem your solution addresses? (150 word limit)

Volunteering has an enormous amount of benefits, including making one feel more like a part of a community. However, it can be difficult to make time for volunteering, let alone find opportunities to volunteer. Based on an initial survey we sent out, we found that many people have frustrations with finding volunteer opportunities, some of these being “some opportunities require background checks and applications,” the age requirements when I was younger,” and “finding opportunities available that fit my schedule.” Since so many of these problems exist when trying to find volunteer opportunities, some people miss out on the chance to volunteer because of missed opportunities, or choose to not even volunteer because of these frustrations. There is a bar for allowing potential volunteers into the space, which inhibits organizations and events from getting volunteers. This has contributed to the increased lack of sense of belonging within communities.

Why did you pick this solution, and how does it address the problem? (150 word limit)

HelpHere is an app that allows people to find nearby volunteer opportunities that suit their interests quickly and easily. As aforementioned in the previous question, many people were frustrated by certain requirements not being visible to them. In our app, we fixed this by implementing statuses for each volunteer opportunity which display the field of work, schedule, and requirements. Users are also able to filter opportunities out, so they will only be able to see those that align with their interests. Users are able to directly see all the information pertaining to the opportunity on the organization’s page, as well as being able to apply to volunteer directly on the app. Additionally, users will receive notifications for volunteer opportunities that they may be interested in. This makes it quick and easy for individuals to find volunteer opportunities, allowing them to feel more connected and integrated into their community.
