Inspiration
HerbalHeals draws inspiration from the timeless traditions of our homes. Born from the remedies brewed in family kitchens and the healing plants tended in household gardens, we blend ancestral wisdom with modern technology. HerbalHeals is a tribute to the age-old practices that nurtured our well-being. Join us as we bring the essence of home wisdom to the digital age, making holistic health a heritage for all.
What it does
HerbalHeals takes your symptoms as input and provides AI-generated herbal remedy suggestions. Beyond that, we consider your skin color, product accessibility, and costs to tailor recommendations to your specific needs. It's all about personalized herbal solutions with practical considerations.
How we built it
In crafting HerbalHeals, we harnessed a diverse set of programming languages and platforms. For the front end, our team collaborated using HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and Node.js. On the backend, the power duo of Python and Flask seamlessly connected the Coheare AI to the website. The result? A harmonious blend of technology, where frontend and backend unite to create the holistic experience that is HerbalHeals.
Challenges we ran into
We had a lot of challenges throughout this hackathon. Learning how to code using new software was quite difficult, as a lot of us had little to no background experience in coding and computer sciences. We had attempted to find resources online to help us create the layout for our website but it had become too confusing to change and sift through to meet our needs. When we were at our wits end, we decided to pivot and switch to a collaborative development software, Replit. To troubleshoot and fix our code. Moreover, the backend of our project proved to be the most difficult part of it all. Figuring out a way to link API/AI to our website was extremely time-consuming and debilitating to navigate. We frequently sought out for help with the surrounding mentors, but after a lot of hard work we had figured out how to troubleshoot.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of the amount of process that we have made in only a day, especially with our level of experience. The information that we gathered about how to code in HTML/CSS/Javascript/Python/Flask and how to do backend work in such a short amount of time is something our team is proud of. We had little to no expectations walking into this hackathon, and in the end, we became better and smarter hackers.
What we learned
We learned a lot at NSBE Hacks. From front-end, to back end, to how design can tie it all together. We learned how to collaborate as a team, how biased search engines and AI can be and the importance to include minority groups with our new technologies, the effects of low-income on those who need medical care, and more.
What's next for HerbalHeals
As our project unfolds, we have exciting plans to develop the HerbalHeals app. In the pipeline is the integration of links to actual grocery stores, making herbal remedies readily accessible.
