Inspiration

Hidden Havens was inspired by the need for a platform that helps marginalized communities find safe, inclusive spaces. We wanted to create a tool that helps to empower people to discover environments where they can feel accepted and at peace.

What it does

Hidden Havens helps users find safe, inclusive spaces based on criteria like LGBTQ+ friendliness, accessibility and other important factors to help them feel like they belong. The platform offers a searchable results page with filters, tags, and community reviews to help users make informed decisions about where to go.

How we built it

We built Hidden Havens using Figma for mockups, HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to build the website and dynamic user interface, PHP, and XXamp to run a locally hosted server, DBeaver, and MySQL for creating and managing our database.

Challenges we ran into

We faced challenges in structuring the search and filter system to be intuitive while managing a diverse set of inclusion criteria. Ensuring that the platform is both accessible and user-friendly was a key hurdle.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We’re proud of creating a functional, easy-to-use platform that addresses an important issue—helping people find safe and inclusive spaces. The seamless integration of filters, tags, and reviews is a feature we’re especially excited about.

What we learned

We learned a lot about designing for accessibility, implementing filter systems, and managing user input for reviews. We also gained insight into how technology can be used to foster inclusivity in society. Working with datasets and csv files was

What's next for HiddenHavens

Next, we plan to expand the platform’s database, improve the user interface based on feedback, and add more advanced features like user-generated content and map integration to enhance the experience. We would also like to implement a review system that allows users to heart, thumbs down, or write a review for a location. This way, users can know which places are highly recommended by those similar to them.
