Inspiration
In today's digital age, the power of online reviews cannot be underestimated. Consumers rely heavily on the experiences and opinions of others before making decisions about products or services. Google Reviews, the most widely used platform for such reviews, plays an important role in shaping these choices. However, there is a fundamental issue in this system: the lack of a robust mechanism to verify the authenticity of reviews. It's not surprising that false positive and false negative reviews frequently make their way onto platforms like Google Reviews, often without any real purchase or experience backing them. These fraudulent reviews can accumulate quickly, damaging the reputation of businesses, especially local ones. This issue raises serious doubts about the true quality of the services or products offered. Our solution, honETHly, a web-app built on the Ethereum blockchain, is designed to ensure transparency, security, and authenticity in online reviews.
What it does
honETHly is a practical solution to a critical problem. Here's how it works: Proof of Transaction: To post a review on our honETHly web app, customers must provide proof of transaction in the form of Ethereum (ETH). This transaction serves as irrefutable evidence of their interaction with the business, be it a purchase or experience, this eliminating the risk of an easily forged photo or receipt. Authenticity Guaranteed: By requiring proof of ETH transaction, honETHly adds an extra layer of authenticity to reviews. Customers can be confident that the feedback they read and provide is based on genuine experiences, reducing the risk of misinformation and biased opinions. Reputation Enhancement: For businesses, honETHly is a game-changer. Genuine positive reviews will boost their reputation, while malicious reviews will be deterred by the stringent verification process. This fosters trust between businesses and customers, resulting in a fair and transparent online marketplace. Blockchain Security: Leveraging the Ethereum blockchain, honETHly ensures the highest level of security for both businesses and customers. Each transaction is securely recorded on the blockchain, making it tamper-proof and transparent for all parties involved. This protects against fraudulent reviews but also establishes trust in the system.
How we built it
To build our web-app we used these technologies:
- React
- Next.js
- Viem
- Wagmi
- Typescript
- Tailwindcss
Challenges we ran into
The biggest challenge was we were all beginners at Ethereum so applying use cases and planning out details was a challenge for us. Using new frameworks and languages was a challenge we ran into, making it harder to debug and implement changes.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Learning about and getting familiar with working with ETH, specifically, connecting the web app to wallets and carrying out transactions was really cool to do! Collaborating well as a group is also something we are proud of!
What we learned
- We learned about Wagmi is and utilize it for our web app! Learning more about blockchain and ETH in general was a main outcome of our hackathon project.
What's next for honETHly
Some next steps for honETHly are:
- add an incentive feature where restaurants can provide tokens to reviewers to encourage customer reviews and use of honETHly
- Create a ranking system with highest reviews or tips to promote well-performing businesses
Built With
- next.js
