Inspiration

Dine-in dollars are wasted every semester, splurged on more sweatshirts or daily Starbucks runs as the semester rolls to a close, signaling the dissipation of money spent since these dine-in dollars don't roll over to the next semester. Upperclassmen who have long since moved past the use of dine-in dollars, often skip meals and reminisce on a time when they could eat on campus. What if there was a way to solve both of these problems?

What it does

hook 'em bucks is an extension of dine-in dollars, a way for upperclassmen to gain dine-in dollars to eat on campus after a late night study session or in the middle of a busy schedule, and a way for underclassmen to gain resources in their early years on campus. hook 'em bucks is an on-campus currency that allows students to buy and sell goods and services to other students. If an underclassman needs a carpool or tutoring for a difficult class, upperclassmen can provide knowledge, experience, and cars. This solves the splurging of dine-in dollars from underclassman each semester (or the waste if they forget to splurge), and it solves the problem of upperclassmen needing a quick bite to eat busy days.

How we built it

We used Wix to build the front end of our web app, and Wix's Content Management System (CMS) to give our web app functionality.

Challenges we ran into

Registering accounts proved to be difficult, since we needed to track users and usernames, give them an account with money, and ensure that no one could create duplicate accounts.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Creating our Minimum Viable Product and seeing our vision for the web app come to life.

What we learned

We came in with little knowledge of web app development and we left with a clearer picture of the processes that go into creating and managing a web app.

What's next for hook 'em bucks

Hopefully a future official UT affiliation, improved security and back end.
