Inspiration
Hope Log was inspired by my personal struggle with depression that began in 2018. During that time, journaling became one of the few consistent habits that gave me clarity and emotional relief. I experimented with apps like Rosebud and Stoic, but found they often lacked the empathy and depth I truly needed. That’s when the idea struck—to create an AI-powered mental health companion that could guide users with emotional intelligence and offer consistent support, like a virtual friend who understands and grows with you.
What it does
Hope Log is an AI-powered journaling and mental health assistant that helps users:
- Journal their thoughts with empathetic guidance
- Track moods and emotional trends over time
- Receive personalized prompts and affirmations
- Access therapy-style reflections like CBT-based questions
- Get insightful summaries that can also be shared with therapists
All data is stored securely, and the AI learns to support the user better over time, ensuring a deeply personal and judgment-free experience.
How we built it
We built Hope Log using a modern tech stack focused on speed, flexibility, and user privacy:
- Frontend: React
- Backend: Node.js, Express
- Database: Postgres
- AI Layer: OpenAI model API for journaling prompts, insights, and conversations
- Version Control & Collaboration: GitHub
The initial MVP was built in 3–4 weeks and is now undergoing user testing.
Challenges we ran into
- Creating emotionally aware AI responses that don’t sound generic or robotic
- Balancing user privacy with helpful AI memory and insights
- Avoiding clinical overreach while still providing therapeutic value
- Managing scope creep while implementing deeply human features like mood recall and memory continuity
- Maintaining user trust while introducing advanced features like AI-driven suggestions and therapist summaries
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Developed a working MVP in under a month with a small, focused team
- Built a robust journaling engine that adapts to user behavior and moods
- Got positive early feedback from users who found emotional value in the tool
- Defined a roadmap for integration with therapists, wearables, and mindfulness guides
- Implemented a long-term memory framework for the AI to build a meaningful relationship with the user
What we learned
- Mental health tools must be built with trust, empathy, and security at their core
- AI can be a powerful support system when designed with emotional intelligence
- Many users are seeking a space to feel heard—not fixed, but understood
- Building in public and engaging early with users leads to better, faster product-market fit
What's next for Hope Log
