Inspiration

All of our teammates are in our first year at USC. And we find it is hard for us to get useful sublease information or post our sublease information online (most students post their requests in a group chat, but this is not an efficient way). So we come up with the idea that we can create a platform to collect all these information, to help students rent their ideal room. (●'◡'●)

What It Does

In total, it provides a platform only for Trojans to find their ideal room resources or to sublease their house/apartment. First, it can help students release their rent and sublet information to a public web-page platform. Then, students can look for the room they want to use some keywords like RentFees, RentDate. Besides, students can also find nearby room resources in our platform. And one most important feature is, only students who have an educational email can sign in our platform, which guarantees the reliability of rental resources. (●'◡'●)

How We Built it

We develop a simple web project with the front-end using HTML, CSS and JavaScript and back-end using Python Flask web framework. We implemented functions of user registration, authentications, rental resources displaying and information post. Also, we use Google Map API for better representing rental resources.

Challenges We Ran into

It is our first time to implement a web project. Sending and retrieving data from a server is also a new problem for us, and we find AJAX a very useful technique in our project. Meanwhile, the design of UI is very hard for us since we know little about front-end programming before this event, and with the help of BooStrap, we can build our UI faster.

Accomplishments that We were Proud of

We really create something that can be beneficial around us students.

And also, we are hard to imagine that we can finish the project in the limited 20 hours.

What We Learned

  • TeamSpirit, Team Work (So lucky to meet all of them by chance)
  • Front-end and back-end programming
  • Google Map API
  • Do things efficiently!

What's next for HouseSC

In a future edition, we will add:

  • more filter options, like living habit of roommates in a shared room.
  • more precise filter algorithm, like supporting customizing rank of features.
  • more details about location, like showing the crime rate of the surrounding area.
