Inspiration

We want to reinvent the way couples interact with each other in a fun way. Whether it is to convey how each other are feeling for the day or just want to annoy your partner without explicitly texting or talking face-to-face, the app got you covered!

What it does

Howdey is a mobile app that enables emotional exchanges of this kind. The app features real-time push notifications to alert users when their significant other updates their mood.

How we built it

The team used Flutter to build and compile the code to Andriod and the iOS app. On the same note, the team has leveraged Firestore for document-based database and cloud messaging for real-time push notifications. This allows the team to rapidly deploy our prototype with no time wasted on setting up servers.

Challenges we ran into

Limited Time. In the end, we decided to focus on one core feature that is building a complete push notification system to fulfill the MVP requirement.

Familiarity with the Techstack. The team faced a hard time setting up the development environment for Flutter and Firebase as none of us has done this before.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

The team managed to explore new technologies -- dart and Flutter within the span of hours.

What we learned

Be less ambitious given specific time constraints. It's better to focus on 1 function and gradually expand on that.

Leverage on each others' strengths. Due to time constraints, we had to distribute work and tasks more effectively according to our strong suit. This helps us save overhead costs to keep the team going.

What's next for Howdey

Stay tuned for future updates such as timed check-in and location tracking features.

We thought this project would be the funniest idea ever, but alas, funniest ≠ fun ≠ easy to implement, especially when 3/4 of the team have never touched Dart or Flutter before. On hindsight, it might be easier to just hack a toaster to play tunes from our Spotify app, but we wouldn't learn much from that anyway. I digress. Mobile app development is cool.
