Impulsa
Making the journey of studying and working abroad easier
Inspiration
Moving abroad is exciting, but it can also be confusing, isolating, and overwhelming. From culture shock to social adaptation, these challenges often go beyond language barriers. We wanted to create a tool that helps people navigate this transition with confidence. Impulsa was built to make adapting to a new culture easier, smarter, and less stressful.
What it does
Impulsa is an AI-powered platform that helps students and professionals adapt to life abroad. It focuses on the emotional and social sides of culture shock — helping users understand customs, behaviors, and expectations in their new environment.
The app combines interactive learning sections (inspired by Duolingo’s level-based approach) with AI chat powered by Claude and GPT. Users can practice cultural scenarios, ask questions, and progress through levels designed to improve real-world understanding.
How we built it
We built Impulsa using:
- React, TypeScript, and Next.js for the frontend architecture
- Tailwind CSS for modern, responsive design
- Clerk for secure authentication and user management
- Claude and GPT-based APIs for conversational AI features
We also created a demo forum to explore how users might share cultural insights and experiences in the future.
Challenges we ran into
- Maintaining smooth context flow between user and AI conversations
- Structuring learning modules into clear, engaging progress levels
- Designing a product that feels welcoming and intuitive for global audiences
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Integrated Claude Chat into a functional learning platform
- Designed level-based learning sections to make adaptation interactive
- Built a forum prototype for testing community engagement
- Created a cohesive, polished UI that balances simplicity and depth
What we learned
We learned how to design for empathy, using AI not just as a tool, but as a support system for real-world adaptation. We gained experience with conversational AI, user experience design, and building scalable React-based applications.
What's next for Impulsa
- Expanding learning levels to include more countries and cultures
- Enhancing AI feedback for personalized, context-aware guidance
- Turning the forum prototype into a functional community space
- Partnering with universities and exchange programs to reach global audiences
