Inspiration

Our inspiration for IntrinsIQ was Schonfeld's call to view stocks through a lens of sustainability. We resonated with the idea of making fundamental data analysis accessible to everyone, breaking down the intimidation often associated with finance. Our goal is to empower individuals, providing them with the tools to navigate the world of investing confidently.

What it does

Calculating intrinsic value can be complex, especially for a beginner. IntrinsIQ does all the heavy lifting by showing you those calculations on demand for any stock within the S&P 500. IntrinsIQ even ranks the companies based on the relationship between the intrinsic value and its current stock price. Examine familiar companies like Apple or Google or hidden gems like Everest Group or Booking Holdings. Discover which stocks are overvalued, undervalued, or sustainable long term holds based on their future discounted cash flows using our easy to digest user interface.

How we built it

IntrinsIQ was built on blood, sweat, and energy drinks. We started off by developing a product roadmap in Notability that guided our every step. While there were plenty of pivots, this was our final build: Our intrinsic valuations were calculated in Python with data fetched from Yahoo Finance and Finviz via APIs. We stored that information in SQLite databases and employed a Flask API to deliver it to the front end. IntrinsIQ's final website was constructed meticulously with TypeScript and React, but not before prototyping everything in Figma.

Challenges we ran into

It was the first time anyone on our team had ever attended a hackathon. The entire experience was brand new, which led to us hitting way more roadblocks than we could have ever imagined. For example, one of our biggest hurdles was building a working API with Flask. It was our first time using Flask, and as such, we ran into countless error messages. That said, we’re not quitters. We preserved, fueled by our desire to build a product we wish existed, up until we finally cracked the code.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

When you Google a stock, you'll typically find a graph and some statistics, but you won't see an intrinsic valuation. We've filled that gap by providing users with access to a crucial metric that was previously hidden from view. It's immensely fulfilling to know that we've made a functional web app that allows essential financial information to be accessible to all. Moreover, our journey has been driven by a team curiosity to learn more about sustainable forms of investment. Building IntrinsIQ means we're not just creating a tool for others; we're crafting something we'll use ourselves, day in and day out. This deep connection to our project fuels our pride and motivates us to continue to improve long after Shell Hacks.

What we learned

The journey of building IntrinsIQ taught us a significant lesson: building a web app is no walk in the park. During ShellHacks, our team embraced an agile approach, holding multiple 'sprints' to make progress. After the initial success of our first sprint, we fell into the trap of underestimating the project's scope. This became obvious after we failed to gain traction in our second sprint. While we ultimately succeeded in delivering our product, it served as a crucial reminder never to become complacent and overconfident in the face of challenges. It is critical to always stay humble and adaptable , as each twist and turn can hold valuable insights and opportunities for growth.

What's next for IntrinsIQ

IntrinsIQ is live and we have no intention of abandoning the project, in fact, we plan to expand the project it in scope. At the moment, we cover the S&P 500, but our vision extends far beyond those 500 companies. We're eager to expand our reach to include thousands more stocks, ensuring that our users can access intrinsic valuations for a comprehensive array of investment options. There's also room to fine-tune our valuation methods by considering more data or offering alternative valuation models for greater context. Another potential path is making IntrinsIQ open source. Our entire team is passionate about open source projects so it would be right down our alley. Ultimately, the goal is to make sustainable investing more accessible, so will ride the route that best aligns with that objective.
