Inspiration

The crime levels have increased in Jamaica. Lawlessness and lack of reporting out of fear have become commonplace. Changing what is now culture will be a difficult transformation. But starting small is still a start, we thought it would be important to give our fellow citizens a platform to report any security-related threat or even just report on traffic flow/violations. A simple report becomes an alert allowing each person to be in the know so they are able to make better decisions as it relates to individual safety.

What it does

JAMi uses live tracking to filters the alerts (sent through instant SMS or on-screen pop-up notifications) based on your specific location zone. Allowing the phone to become a tool to inform you if you are approaching an area that may be potentially dangerous. This app helps our users to be steps ahead of any danger they may face on a daily basis.

How We built it

We used Flutter to create the Mobile app and Firebase for our Database- essentially manipulating live geolocation and device tracking via the Google Maps API we have implemented an Alert System which uses crowdsourcing to gain security-relevant details in real-time.

Our users are sent live notifications on any inconveniences or potential threats to safety. Keeping them aware and ALERT on the go, providing them with the chance to adjust their route or to simply be in the know about critical events even before the authorities.

Challenges We ran into

Our developers will attest to spending hours trying to gain access to the Google Maps API. Then having to learn how to interact with said API using Flutter. The timeline was limiting for our big idea but we were determined to have a great MVP.

Accomplishments that we are proud of

With the given time we accomplished more than 80% of what we set out for regarding our demo. We also learned how to implement Google location API and other libraries needed to complete our demo.

What We learned

We can get anything done if we are completely focused on delivering.

What's next for JAMi

We plan to continue the development of this app.
