Inspiration

We were inspired by the growing isolation faced by seniors, especially during recent times, and the lack of accessible tech solutions to keep them engaged. Loneliness and cognitive decline are serious issues, and we thought AI could be the perfect tool to address both simultaneously.

What it does

Kawa is an AI-powered voice companion that combats social isolation and provides cognitive stimulation to seniors. It engages in real-time, personalized conversations and offers simple mind games like memory and math challenges—all fully controlled by voice to ensure ease of use.

How we built it

We quickly prototyped Kawa using an AI language model integrated with voice recognition software. We focused on minimizing latency to make conversations feel natural and personalized, while also incorporating simple voice-activated games. The core challenge was designing a simple interface, especially for seniors with little tech experience.

Challenges we ran into

The biggest hurdles were optimizing the AI to run smoothly with voice commands and ensuring it felt engaging without being too complicated. Balancing personalization in conversations while keeping everything real-time and low-latency was also tough.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We’re proud of creating a fully voice-controlled, real-time AI companion in such a short time. Seeing the solution work seamlessly to simulate human interaction while offering cognitive games was a huge win for us.

What we learned

Hackathons are all about iterating quickly, and we learned how important it is to focus on the user experience, especially for seniors. Designing for accessibility and ease of use was key, and it taught us how to think outside the box when simplifying technology.

What's next for Kawa

We want to refine Kawa’s conversation engine and add more diverse games to make it even more engaging. We also plan to test it further in environments like nursing homes to ensure it truly addresses the needs of seniors.
