Inspiration

Many teachers and students have been struggling with the shift to online learning. We thought to build an academic website that can be easily understood to help out with teachers and make virtual learning more fun. Along with our interest in Chemistry, we created Keep it Balanced for chemistry teachers and students to aid them during virtual learning.

What it does

Keep it Balanced provides an in depth step by step tutorial on how to balance equations. It provides multiple examples to strengthen the student’s understanding of balancing chemical equations as well as practice problems.

How we built it

Keep it Balanced was built using HTML5, CSS3, and javascript in Dreamweaver and Repl.It. For Color Theme we used two main elements: orange and blue (#FFA584 and #5A86FF) . For the artwork and backgrounds we used Medibang Paint Pro.

Challenges we ran into

Initially our team had 3 team members but unfortunately two of our teammates were unable to contribute after midway. With only one person it was uneasy to continue the task of finishing the hackathon with a great product because there’s no one giving feedback. What’s fortunate, though, is that we had a new teammate join in at almost the end of the hackathon. Together with two people, we succeeded and worked productively to eventually make our way to a great completion.

Accomplishments that we’re proud of

Even though we had only 1 and then 2 members in our group, We completed one topic for the goal we had earlier. We are proud of our graphic and UI design, which we spent a heavy percentage of time appropriating. We were able to absorb and utilize new information onto our own projects.

What we learned

This being our first time working as a team, we learned communication, teamwork, and time management skills that are going to be useful for our entire life. We learned knowledge on bioinformatics specifically the blockchain, and a more thorough understanding of VR/AR technology. Overall we really appreciated the effort from the host for us to learn freely.

What's next for Keep it Balanced

Keep it Balanced is only the sub-part of our entire project with more Chemistry Topics. We also hope to create a comfortable online environment for students to learn. In order to do this we plan on making color themes available for change, timed learning, progress check, calm background music, and a scoring system. We wish to establish an entire learning platform eventually that is not only helpful, but also comfortable and can increase student’s concentration and enthusiasm on learning.
