Inspiration

I recently watched a scary video made by a vet outlining some toxic flowers cats can't be around and how this isn't basic knowledge, thus lots of cats come to their clinic sick from them. This gave us the idea for the game; what else do we not know about cats that could potentially hurt them?

What it does

This is an educational, interactive game which aims to educate players about foods that cats can not consume, hoping to prevent more sick cats from visiting the vet.

How we built it

We used Game Maker to build our project. For the sprites, we used the in-game canvas.

Challenges we ran into

We were stuck for a bit on implementing the levels. We knew that each room could be used as a level but since we have never used Game Maker in the past, it was unclear to us how we were meant to switch between different rooms. To list some others: font size for points, cat not exploding, spawning of the cat in its given level. We faced quite a few challenges being new at the engine but after quite a bit of trial and error as well as googling away, we managed to overcome all these challenges together.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Being able to switch to the next level once the win condition is met and additionally, the cat respawning in the level that it died in.

What we learned

Through this project, we learned also what foods cats can and can't eat as well as how to utilise Game Maker and the online forums to help instead of giving up.

What's next for Know Your Cat

As the inspiration for this project was certain flowers that were toxic to cats, we may implement further levels that touch on this too and extend the food category to anything else.
