Kommely: Redefining Senior Care with Technology

Inspiration

At 19, I became the primary caregiver for my 79-year-old father, who was battling stage 4 cancer. I had to put my education on hold because there was no one available to take care of him. This experience opened my eyes to a harsh reality—many seniors in Africa lack proper care simply because their families are too busy or unable to provide full-time support.

With over 67 million seniors in Africa, projected to reach 163 million by 2050 (WHO), the need for accessible and professional caregiving solutions is urgent. Families struggle with balancing their lives while ensuring their elderly loved ones are cared for. This inspired me to create Kommely, a platform that connects seniors with caregivers through an intelligent match-based system, ensuring personalized and timely care.

What I Learned

Throughout this journey, I gained valuable insights into the gaps in elderly care:

  • There is a shortage of caregivers compared to the increasing senior population.
  • Families often experience guilt and stress due to inadequate caregiving options.
  • Many existing care platforms lack emergency response systems, leaving seniors vulnerable in critical situations.
  • Transparency in pricing and service quality is essential for trust and reliability.

These lessons shaped Kommely into more than just a caregiver-matching platform—it became a lifeline for seniors and a relief for families.

Building the Project

To bring Kommely to life, we focused on three core aspects:

  1. Caregiver Matching System – Using AI-driven algorithms to match seniors with professional caregivers based on unique needs.
  2. Emergency Response Feature – Integrating fall and distress sound detection to alert caregivers and family members in real-time.
  3. Seamless Payment & Transparent Pricing – Implementing an in-app wallet system for secure and convenient transactions.

Our team conducted market research, user interviews, and competitor analysis to refine the platform, ensuring it meets the needs of both seniors and their families.

Challenges Faced

The journey was not without obstacles:

  • Finding Qualified Caregivers: Ensuring caregivers met high standards of professionalism and empathy.
  • Technical Implementation: Developing a reliable and accurate fall and distress detection system.
  • Building Trust: Convincing families to trust our platform with the well-being of their loved ones.
  • Market Entry Strategy: Deciding the best way to introduce Kommely, starting with Rwanda before expanding to other African countries.

Looking Ahead

Kommely is more than an app—it’s a movement to ensure no senior is left alone. As we continue refining and expanding our services, our vision remains clear: to provide seniors with the care they deserve while giving families peace of mind.
