Inspiration
Our journey began with a simple, yet urgent question posed by the "Connecting Cultures" hackathon track: In a world of fleeting digital trends, how do we ensure the timeless stories of Indonesia don't just survive, but thrive?
As young Indonesians, we are surrounded by immense cultural wealth, but we see a growing disconnect. Heritage is often presented as a relic, something to be observed in a museum or read about in a textbook. It feels static, passive, and struggles to compete for the attention of a generation raised on interactive entertainment.
The hackathon's Capture, Translate, Engage, Sustain framework became our guiding light. We were deeply inspired by the challenge to create something that wasn't just another digital archive, but an irresistible experience. We didn't just want to build an app; we wanted to build a bridge, a bridge connecting the past to the present, a bridge connecting users to stories, and most importantly, a bridge connecting a global audience to the real-life artisans who are the guardians of our culture.
What it does
Kultour is a mobile app that transforms cultural education into a captivating, gamified quest. It directly answers the hackathon's challenge by creating an ecosystem where users don't just consume culture, they participate in it.
• Explore the Archipelago: After a simple and inviting login, users begin their adventure on a beautiful, swipeable map of Indonesia, ready to explore the archipelago's wonders.
• Discover Stories: A dynamic, "TikTok-style" feed presents captivating previews of stories, music, and traditions, inviting users to begin a quest.
• Live the Legends: Users immerse themselves in interactive stories where their actions, playing virtual traditional instruments from various regions, or engaging in AI-judged cultural dialogues, are required to drive the narrative forward.
• Build a Legacy: Completing quests rewards users with XP, level-ups, and beautiful digital collectibles (Heritage). They can customize a personal avatar and track their journey on a rich profile page.
• Meet the Guardians: The app features a "Guardians of the Craft" gallery, a promotional platform showcasing real Indonesian artisans through rich profiles, stories, and video content, linking users directly to their work.
How we built it
Core Architecture: We started by designing a robust, user-centric flow built on key pillars: The Journey (Map), The Story Feeds (Discovery), Interactive Story Quests (Gamification), Heritage (Collection), The Profile (Personalization), and the Artisan Bridge (Sustainability).
Design & Prototyping: We brought our vision to life using Figma to design and prototype the entire user interface and user experience. The beautiful, painterly illustrations for our stories and characters were generated using Gemini AI by Google, allowing us to establish rich art direction.
Technology Conceptualized: We architected Kultour around key innovations to fulfill the hackathon's framework:
• Gamification Engine: A system for XP, leveling, achievements, and customizable avatars.
• Immersive Tech: We designed features using Augmented Reality for our "Try On" filters and an AI model for our contextual language challenges.
• Kultour AI: A conversational AI chatbot, framed as a wise guide, allowing users to ask questions and dive deeper into the lore after completing a story.
Challenges we ran into
The Tone Paradox: Our biggest challenge was balancing a playful, "kid friendly" art style with the deep, sometimes serious, cultural content. We solved this by creating a "framing" strategy using illustrated "guide" characters and thematic UI to present deeper content (like artisan documentaries) as an exciting reward, rather than a dry lesson.
Avoiding the "Digital Museum": It was tempting to just load the app with information. The challenge was to make it truly interactive. Our breakthrough was embedding mini games directly into the story's critical moments. You don't just learn about the Gamelan, you have to play it to save the heroes. This makes participation essential, not optional.
The Immensity of "Indonesia": The challenge was fitting the rich culture of even one island into a short project. We decided to build a strong, adaptable system for Bali that can later grow to include the many other cultures throughout Indonesia.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are very proud to have created a connected, multi-layered system that fully meets all four parts of the hackathon framework in one elegant solution. Rather than just adding a single feature, we designed a complete engagement cycle:
• Capture: We collect stories in beautiful digital collectibles.
• Translate: We convey language and philosophy through interactive challenges.
• Engage: We involve users by making them the heroes of the story.
• Sustain: We support culture by promoting and assisting real-life artisans.
Additionally, we believe our concept has great potential to positively impact society and the economy, helping both young Indonesians and traditional creators bridge the digital gap.
What we learned
We discovered that the best way to teach is by creating a compelling story that sparks users' desire to learn. When users connect with the characters, they naturally want to explore the culture.
What's next for Kultour
We plan to fully develop the app and build partnerships with companies to fund and support our project.
