Laptop Builder

Inspiration

Every now and then, friends would ask for my advice on the best laptop to choose. I wished I could just send them a direct link, just like I could with pcpartpicker.com.

What it does

Laptop Builder lets users choose various computer components to find the best laptop for their use case. An AI assistant is available to give suggestions and guidance, as well as final validation of the overall build.

How we built it

The initial idea was built in Google AI Studio. The implementation was completed via Google Antigravity.

Challenges we ran into

Laptop "building" is not as straightforward as building your own PC. You can't just pick and combine components-- there are proprietary variations, incompatibilities, and other complications. All of this had to be captured in precise validation rules.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

The app is fully working as a proof of concept. While the initial prototype was made by Google AI Studio, the fully functioning app was completed with my own efforts, with some delegation to Google Antigravity for research on the component names, specs, assets, etc.

What we learned

With the complications in choosing the right laptop, no wonder people prefer to just ask a knowledgeable friend. But with the Laptop Builder app, that friend is Gemini, as the build guidance and verification are provided by an AI assistant.

What's next for Laptop Builder

Partnership with major laptop manufacturers for more accurate specs and parts lists.
