Inspiration

From our various backgrounds we noticed that a vast majority of the resources for learning about literature are in English. In Latin-American countries especially, this is representative of a larger language barrier. Léelo definitively attacks this problem, providing the opportunities that English speaking populaces often take for granted by providing content supported and catered to multiple languages.

What it does

Leelo is a literature information platform aimed to allow users to learn about books, authors, and literary terms, all in different languages. The biggest pitfall of services such as google translate and its related web extensions is that users have little to no input on flawed translations. By allowing users to put translation requests and comments on what is displayed, it allows for a much more accurate, meaningful experience of learning.

How we built it

Essentially this is a mostly static webpage with a minimal amount of JS elements. We're using the Flask web framework to display the HTML templates, Google Cloud to handle hosting and Firebase to handle user data.

Challenges we ran into

Our Docker container that we hosted on Google Cloud didn't work for a bit due to a route switch in Flask, and just general dependencies issue. The most annoying challenge that we overcame is a parsing issue with Flask causing an image not to load. A screenshot hosted on imgur is included here: https://i.imgur.com/B8ZbUit.png. It was also an interesting experience to leverage everyone's background and varying levels of programming to create the end product.

What's next for Léelo

Scaling Leelo would mean leveraging sturdier technologies and refactoring some of what we have now. That being said, a lot of the core functionalities and notions would remain the same, it is a matter of fleshing them out and tailoring content specific to our users and intended audience.
