Inspiration
Our motivation for developing a dyslexia finance information app stemmed from discussions about the challenges faced by a dyslexic friend in accessing financial information and the limited availability of inclusive resources. Even though there has been progress in bettering technology and education to support dyslexic individuals, the finance sector has lacked in this advancement, and little to no software address this problem.
What it does
LexiGraph is a comprehensive finance information app tailored to the needs of dyslexic users. It provides a user-friendly interface with dyslexia-friendly fonts and layouts, making financial data accessible and understandable. Users can access real-time financial news, as well as current and past stock market data, allowing users to make proper financial decisions. It also utilizes text-to-speech technology, giving another level of accessibility to users who might struggle with reading the content on our website.
How we built it
LexiGraph was built using modern web development technologies, including HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and Python. We leveraged dyslexia-friendly fonts and design principles to ensure the app's accessibility. Beyond this, we also used many different collaboration techniques, including proper GitHub procedures, division of labor, and effective communication.
Challenges we ran into
One of the key challenges we encountered was finding the right balance between design aesthetics and dyslexia-friendly features. For example, we wanted to add a more interactive tooltip that would present more information to the user, however, the text under that library was not dyslexia-friendly. Due to this, we opted out on using this feature, and continued focusing on adding dyslexia-friendly features.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are very proud of the fact that we only use the NasDaq API call for our entire software, instead of juggling multiple different APIs. We did a lot of research before choosing our selected API, but we believe it was well worth it in the end, as it allowed us to simplify a lot of our development process, while also preventing our backend from becoming too bloated.
What we learned
We gained proficiency in using Flask, a software that none of us had used prior to this hackathon. However, this ended up being vitally useful to us, as our whole web app is based off it. We also gained exposure to financial time series data, specifically on the segmentation and highlights of this data, so that users have access to the most important points. But above all, the biggest thing we learned was how different and difficult it is for dyslexic people to have the same level of access to information as non-dyslexic people.
What's next for LexiGraph
In the next phase of LexiGraph's development, we are committed to enhancing the user experience by introducing interactive financial simulations and gamified learning modules. These engaging features will further empower dyslexic users to build their financial knowledge and skills in an enjoyable and educational manner. By doing so, we can create a more learning based financial software, allowing users of multiple different ages to use our product.
