Inspiration

We were inspired by Rye's backing in the medical and pharmaceutical field, and JP's experience having to translate for other people, as well as witnessing firsthand the troubles that can arise from a language barrier between patient and caregiver.

What it does

LangCura is a web app designed for non-native speakers to be able to enter medical information, records, and details into a form, have it stored securely, retrieved, and translated to English - giving them an easy and clear way to communicate with medical staff.

How we built it

LangCura was built almost entirely with HTML, JavaScript, Python, and Flask. A few shotgunned red bulls helped the process too.

Challenges we ran into

Figuring out how to actually translate the medical data was difficult at first, as every translator API we found was paid. Eventually, we decided to look into AI models, and specifically chose one rated the highest in translating with OpenRouter.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

The biggest and first accomplishment we're proud of is that we were able to so quickly and succinctly arrive at our idea for this project, and that it perfectly intersected both of our experience and interests. We're proud that we've made a working product that we both enjoy for our first hackathon, especially as a team of only two.

What we learned

JP - My biggest takeaway is that coding is HARD. Coming into this as an MAE major I have little to no experience with Python, but picking it up in the span of 24 hrs while trying to beat a deadline has been the best crash-course I could have ever asked for.

Rye - That I perform best in a time-crunch environment like the one afforded to us by HackOKState. Nothing motivates you to work like a looming deadline.

What's next for LangCura?

Going forwards, we really just want to be able to flesh out the idea, there were so many great ideas we either wanted to see implemented, or almost DID implement, that were left on the cutting room floor due to time constraints. Namely, more AI integration and adding in a map feature that shows nearby hospitals or urgent cares in the user's native language. We would love to add more language support to serve even more patients.

Update 3 - 11:36am

We survived the night! Mostly... The deadline's coming up on us and I have my beloved backend programmer hard at work finalizing things that I don't understand, while I really put a polish on everything visual. Wax on - wax off, you feel me?

Update 1 - 4:18am

After a late start caused by my sleeping in, we quickly decided we wanted to design a tool that did something appealing to both of us, in this case, combining medicine with translation!

We've since spent the first half of the competition with Rye grinding out backend, while I scrolled pinterest while fussing over two identical shades of red for the UI.

I also stepped out from 11pm - 2am for a ̶p̶a̶r̶t̶y̶ family friendly social gathering with peers and discussed UI and UX with fellow students, to ̶g̶e̶t̶ ̶s̶e̶n̶d̶y̶ ̶a̶n̶d̶ ̶s̶l̶a̶m̶ ̶b̶r̶e̶w̶s̶ better get a feel for what the general public wants to see in an app like this.

I also came back dressed like a playboy bunny.

As we go into the early morning hours we plan to get the app functional, albeit in a barebones state.... ......and also to eat breakfast at some point.
