Inspiration
Literacy education is lacking worldwide, with high teacher burnout, outdated classroom technologies, and insufficient individualized resources for students. Having done educational research for my superintendent's PhD over the summer, I realized what an issue literacy education was in our school district and for millions around the world, and I wanted to create an AI-powered solution to provide personalized literacy education and analysis to overcome these challenges.
What it does
Literacy.AI is an AI assistant that analyzes text passages and guides students towards fluent reading mastery. It utilizes natural language processing to provide personalized feedback, measure progress, and suggest improvements on a student's literary analysis skills.
How I built it
I used a ReactJS frontend, Google Cloud NLP API for text analysis and accuracy functions, along with Google Cloud for text classification, and lastly serverless deployment with Docker on Google Cloud
Challenges I ran into
Integrating AI capabilities into a smooth React frontend was tricky, along with learning new frameworks like Google Cloud and specific React frameworks. Working solo and pulling an all-nighter to complete the MVP pushed me to my limits, but the hackathon experience was made enjoyable and relaxing.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
I combined my passions for education and AI into a meaningful project, pushed myself to learn new skills in React, Google Cloud, and TensorFlow, and delivered a working MVP in a short timeframe that can help people.
What I learned
Problem ideation and using skills to fill a need, improved ReactJS design and development skills, and the basics of Google Cloud and TensorFlow for AI
What's next for Literacy.AI
I hope to keep refining Literacy.AI into a sustainable business to provide universal literacy education through AI, empowering learners across the world one word at a time.
