Inspiration
Sometimes it is hard to keep up with what events are happening in your local area or you often can forget about them as they come. It would be nice that someone could inform you about the event and it's details, also remind about upcoming ones. Maybe a Discord bot could help..?
What it does
Everyday „Local wave“ suggests you an upcoming event on your location and sends the details about it via private message. It’s a great way to keep up with what is happening on your area and don’t miss out on some good events you are interested in!
How we built it
As we formed a team „Not so secret whale house“ first we started with discussion what we are using while communicating, what platforms are comfortable to use, also what is missed or needed while using a platform, in this case - Discord. As we brainstormed what practical use a bot could have, we came to conclusion that it would be nice that it could send a private message to remind/ inform about upcoming events in users location. We divided work into 3 parts and every team member had his own role:
- Researching and extracting the information about events.
- Making design, description and bot working structure.
- programming and implementing bot to Discord platform.
Challenges we ran into
The main challenge was to find the suitable platform that we could take information about upcoming events in various locations. We started to look for platforms different countries have, but that could be suitable just for that area residents. After research we found that broad variety of events depending on the selected location can be found on Facebook events, Eventbrite or Allevents. Our group decided to focus on Facebook events and try to take the information for „Local wave“ bot private messages from there.
What's next for LOCAL WAVE
Our group can see some improvements that could be made to make „Local wave“ bot more personalised, for example: • Save multiple locations to favourites • Local area selection including premises/suburbs of the city around
