LOCAL EATS 🍔

Inspiration❗

LocalEats was inspired by our passion for exploring local cuisine and supporting small businesses. We wanted to create a platform that would make it easier for people to discover and enjoy the hidden gems of their local food scene. In the end, we wanted to create a platform where users would be able to diversify and enhance their dining experience by having a taste of different local cultures/cuisines.

What it does 🤔

LocalEats is a website that helps users find the best local restaurants in their area. It provides a user-friendly interface where visitors can search for restaurants based on their location, cuisine preferences, and other filters. Each restaurant listing includes essential information such as ratings, reviews, contact details, and a link to the restaurant's website or online menu.

How we built it 🔨

We built LocalEats using Wix, a popular website development platform, and Velo, which is Wix's built-in development platform. Wix provided us with an intuitive drag-and-drop editor for designing the website's layout and visual elements. Velo allowed us to add custom functionality, such as character animations, modulo prompts and so much more.

Throughout the development process, we leveraged HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to customize the website's design and behavior. We also integrated various APIs to enhance the user experience, including geolocation services to provide accurate location-based search results and review platforms to gather restaurant ratings and reviews.

Challenges we ran into 🔎

While building LocalEats, we encountered several challenges. One of the major hurdles was integrating the geolocation services seamlessly with the website. Ensuring accurate location detection and handling errors gracefully proved to be a complex task. Additionally, gathering and aggregating restaurant data from multiple sources required careful data management and processing to ensure consistency and reliability.

Another challenge we faced was optimizing the website's performance, especially when dealing with a restaurant listings. We had to implement efficient algorithms and caching mechanisms to deliver fast and responsive results.

Accomplishments that we're proud of 💪

We are proud to have successfully created a functional and user-friendly website that fulfills its purpose of helping users discover local restaurants. Our team worked collaboratively and effectively to bring the project to life within the given timeframe. We were able to design an appealing interface, implement advanced search functionality, and integrate various external APIs seamlessly.

Moreover, we had no knowledge of Velo by Wix coming into this hackathon. Within 24 hrs we were able to pick up on the fundamentals of this new technology and make a final project to present. That is definitely one thing we ourselves are impressed by.

What we learned 🧠

Working on LocalEats provided us with valuable learning experiences. We gained hands-on experience with website development using Wix and Velo, understanding their capabilities and limitations. We honed our skills in front-end design and user experience, ensuring that the website is visually appealing and easy to navigate.

Additionally, we deepened our knowledge of integrating APIs and leveraging external services to enhance our website's functionality. We learned how to handle data from various sources and efficiently manage it within the website's ecosystem.

Collaborating as a team taught us the importance of effective communication and task coordination. We learned to divide responsibilities, leverage each team member's strengths, and adapt to challenges along the way.

What's next for LocalEats ⏩

For LocalEats, we have exciting plans for future development. Some of the features and improvements we envision include:

Expanding coverage: We aim to broaden the website's reach by including more cities and regions, allowing users to explore local restaurants beyond their immediate area.

Enhanced user interactions: We plan to incorporate features that encourage community engagement, such as user reviews, ratings, and the ability to bookmark favorite restaurants.

Personalized recommendations: By leveraging user preferences and dining history, we want to provide personalized restaurant recommendations tailored to each user's taste and location.

Mobile application: We intend to develop a companion mobile application for LocalEats, offering users the convenience of finding local restaurants on the go.

Partnerships and collaborations: We aim to establish partnerships with local restaurant associations, food bloggers, and influencers to provide exclusive deals, promotions, and curated restaurant lists.
