Inspiration
The William Hill App has all the sports, all the meetings and lots of different betting options, which generally is great. However when you're at an event and you decide to place a bet chances are you are going to be betting on that event.
What it does
Our location based betting aims to clear a path to the bets that you are most likely to choose, matching your phone's location to the venue. Allowing you to find the right bet as quickly as possible.
How we built it
We started with the William Hill API providing access to events and outcomes. We then augmented that data with a minimal amount of location information. A web based application feeds a users location to our backend web service, allowing us to return associated events and betting options.
Challenges we ran into
Building a database of sporting venues proved the most challenging component of our build. As this information wasn't readily available in an easily accessible form we chose to map a limited number of venues for demonstration purposes.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Allowing the user to place a bet at a venue in under 5 clicks.
What we learned
None of knew how to build a web application. We still don't know how to build a robust one, but we're a little bit closer.
What's next for LocoBets
Extend the application, adding additional sports and location based features. For example a what are people near me betting on feature.
