Inspiration

We noticed that most students struggle with time management, motivation, and staying consistent with their studies. Canvas and calendars tell you what’s due, but they don’t guide you on how to prepare day by day. We wanted to make studying feel less stressful and more fun—like playing a game with friends instead of a chore.

What it does

Luntera is a space-themed gamified planner that transforms syllabi and Canvas calendars into adaptive daily study maps. Students log in, upload their classes and syllabi, and Luntera:

Creates a day-by-day roadmap of study tasks

Adjusts automatically if plans change (like skipping a day or going to a party)

Generates quick daily practice sessions (math, science, etc.) with explanations and linked videos

Predicts grades based on performance and consistency

Rewards progress with XP, streaks, and customizable spaceships/planets

Lets friends check in, compete in duels, and grow their galaxies together

How we built it

Frontend: A space-themed UI inspired by Duolingo’s path and game maps

Backend: AI that parses syllabi, integrates Canvas calendar data, and generates adaptive study tasks

Gamification: Progression system with XP, streaks, and planet/ship customization

Database: Personal class + syllabus database stored per user so AI “knows” their courses inside out

Integrations: Video support (e.g., My Chemistry Tutor), Canvas sync, email helper for professors

Challenges we ran into

Designing adaptive schedules that feel flexible but not overwhelming

Making AI practice questions both short and effective

Creating balance between fun gamification and academic seriousness

Handling syllabus parsing reliably across different formats

Ensuring the multiplayer aspect (duels, planets) stays motivational, not stressful

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Building a truly adaptive study system that reacts to real-life changes

Designing a map-based UI that makes academics feel like an adventure through space

Integrating study guides, practice quizzes, and grade prediction into one seamless platform

Creating a social layer where friends can motivate each other instead of competing in isolation

What we learned

Students need accountability as much as they need organization

Gamification works best when it’s simple and tied to tangible academic progress

Flexibility is key—students don’t want a rigid planner, they want something that moves with them

Social motivation (friends checking in, duels) drives consistency more than reminders alone

What’s next for Luntera

Expanding AI features to generate full study guides and practice exams

Adding note and PowerPoint uploads so AI can learn from class material directly

Improving multiplayer with leaderboards and collaborative missions

Exploring partnerships with educators and YouTube creators for subject-specific content

Scaling from single universities to global student communities
