Inspiration
Most streaming services like Spotify have too many ads and have bad quality, and they are unsuitable for classical music. Apple Music Classical is also not good enough and much too expensive.
What it does
You are able to choose and filter works of renaissance, baroque, classical, romantic, 20th century, contemporary, minimalist, fusion (with jazz, heavy metal, etc.) and cinematic classical music, along with the classical music of other non-western cultures such as Chinese and Indian classical music.
How we built it
I used XML in order to build a database and HTML to build
Challenges we ran into
HTML unfortunately doesn't natively support FLAC audio playback, which was unfortunate because FLAC is lossless (so it sounds exactly the same as uncompressed) and it is very high quality. In addition, high quality FLAC recordings are rather difficult.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
I was able to fit the entirety of the Mahler application onto a single floppy diskette, and it functions on a laptop from 2003. This will be able to bring classical music to wider audiences without the ability to access more advanced and greater computing power.
What we learned
I learnt a lot about classical music and brushed up my music theory knowledge.
What's next for Mahler
I want to continue working on Mahler and improving it until it becomes a viable option for people to stream classical music in the real world.
