Project overview
The project is a cross-platform mobile application that connects consumers to surplus food deals from nearby merchants while also surfacing “hidden gem” food establishments that deserve more attention. The app targets two core problems in urban environments: the significant amount of edible food discarded at the end of each day, and the difficulty for smaller or lesser-known food businesses to reach potential customers. By aggregating time-sensitive discounts on soon-to-expire items together with user-submitted recommendations, the platform aims to increase merchant revenue, lower consumers’ food costs, and reduce avoidable food waste.
Key features
Merchants can list surplus items with pricing, quantities, and pickup windows, while customers browse these “closing soon” deals in a visually rich feed with filters for location and price. A complementary “hidden gems” section allows users to nominate and upvote their favourite under-the-radar food spots, creating a community-driven discovery layer on top of the deal mechanics. Location selection and mapping features support precise pickup directions and make it easy to explore nearby listings, while push notifications alert users to expiring offers or highly rated gems.
Impact
Technically, the app is built with a modern mobile stack to support real-time updates, scalable data storage, and a smooth user experience suitable for rapid iteration during and after the hackathon. From a societal perspective, the project aspires to make sustainable consumption feel rewarding and convenient, turning everyday dining decisions into small but meaningful contributions toward reducing food waste.
