MapCare
The inspiration behind this project comes from what Covid proved to us, misinformation is as great of an enemy as the events around it, and, on the flip side, thrust-worthy information on the palm of your hand can not only change lives, but also save them. MapCare´s goal is to become a healthcare hub deserving of your trust, offering a simple escape to the landslide of information we tend to be appalled by.
What it does
MapCare displays in a simple yet efficient manner all the information you need to be healthy, from up-to-date information about any sanitary contingency such as the one covid was, to atmospheric information you should be careful with such as air quality. According to the risks the program found, it will share tips in how to protect yourself from the environment.
MapCare displays everything you need to know to stay healthy when going outside, the information it provides goes from up-to-date data from any sanitary contingency to atmospheric information you should consider while going outside, such as air quality and temperature. afterwards, it shows simple steps to protect yourself from the health risks the program found, such as wearing a facemask or sunscreen or even to avoid being outside to protect yourself from factors such as bad air quality.
How we built it
MapCare is 3 html documents that uses JavaScript to control the map it has and show every state, to fill the data table and be nice and easy to use, we also used PHP to make a simple connection with the database and finally we used CSS to have a simple display. The data base was done using SQL, we only used one database and 3 tables with the state and the thing we wanted to warn the users. The program to the side with our web page was powered by web scrapping trustworthy sites such as the CDC and IQair to provide the newest data and update the database automatically.
Our greatest challenge was the lack of experience, two out of four members didn’t have prior coding experience, and the 2 members that knew have never worked with data scraping. These conditions opened the door for problems such as understanding where to scrape data from and how to portrait and interpret it the way we wanted to do it in a first place.
What we are proud of
We are proud of every single skill we learned or improve while working, learning to work as a team to focus on what we are best in and overcome our shortcomings and dividing the workload in an efficient manner to finish in time. But, by far, the thing we are the proudest of is of aiming way further than what our capabilities were before the hackathon and striving to deliver something that can contribute to our society.
What we learned
All the team started to learn or improve skills on JavaScript and CSS, learned to scrap data and how to identify usable information as well as to improve our information managing skills by working with gigantic data pools. The 2 members that didn’t have prior experience learned the basic of c#, the other 2 members learned to build the structure to scrap data, how to send information to databases and to work in a team.
What's next for MapCare.
We want MapCare to be able to show information about every state of the world, with several trustworthy sources, be more precise with the information (make the information by cities and not states) and have more things you can check with MapCare such as more virus.
