Inspiration
The inspiration for Maps to Meals came from the urgent need to address the growing crisis of food insecurity in Haiti. This is a problem that affects millions but often goes unaddressed due to lack of reliable infrastructure and information.
What it does
Our website allows local providers to share their food with people in their area. This allows them to gain business as well as show places for those in need.
How we built it
We created a flask-based web application with python, html, and css.
Challenges we ran into
Finding source for the maps. We attempted to use many different APIs, but they were either costly or difficult to use.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Website has specific maps based on what part of Haiti someone is located in. This feature allows them to find food suppliers closer to them.
What we learned
We learned that a great way to prevent food shortages is to increase the awareness of surrounding food. This gave us hope for solving these larger systemic issues.
What's next for Maps for Meals
Next for Maps For Meals is a few different choices. We want to include other languages in order to increase accessibility. As well as this we would like an option to get directions to a specific food sources.
