Inspiration The idea for MaraLink came from noticing how disconnected many neighborhoods feel. Despite living close together, people often don’t know what's happening in their community or even who lives nearby. I wanted to create something that made local communication easier, more useful, and more personal—something that could help rebuild a real sense of neighborhood connection in a digital world.

What it does MaraLink is a neighborhood engagement app that lets residents:

Share announcements and local updates

View events and activities on a community map

Chat securely with nearby users

Receive personalized morning briefings and community news

Play light, casual games to stay engaged

It’s designed to make community life more connected, supportive, and enjoyable, all in one app.

How we built it We started by identifying the core features needed to support a modern neighborhood: communication, event sharing, and real-time updates. The app was built using modern front-end tools and frameworks, with a secure back-end for authentication and data storage. We implemented AI to generate dynamic morning briefings and made sure everything felt lightweight, fast, and user-friendly.

Design-wise, we prioritized simplicity—clean interfaces, clear navigation, and features that feel familiar but focused on local needs.

Challenges we ran into One of the biggest challenges was balancing privacy with visibility. Users need to feel safe, especially when sharing updates in a neighborhood setting. We spent a lot of time refining the account system, permissions, and content moderation tools.

Integrating several features— social feeds, messaging—without overwhelming the user was another tough balance. Keeping the app lightweight but powerful was a constant design and performance challenge.

Accomplishments that we're proud of We’re proud of how cohesive the app turned out. It doesn’t just feel like a bundle of features—it feels like a single, focused experience. We’re also proud of the AI-powered morning brief feature, which adds a thoughtful and personal touch each day.

Most of all, we’re proud that this app has the potential to genuinely improve how people experience their neighborhood—something that often gets overlooked in tech.

What we learned We learned how important it is to build with empathy—understanding what people really need, not just what’s technically possible. We also gained a deeper understanding of how communities function and how tech can enhance (or damage) those dynamics.

On the technical side, we learned a lot about integrating various systems smoothly—maps, messaging, AI tools, and security features—into one seamless platform.

What's next for MaraLink Next, we’re working on expanding user personalization—things like interest-based notifications, more robust event tools, and group chats. We also want to introduce features for local businesses and organizations to post updates and host events, further strengthening the connection between people and their neighborhoods.

Long term, the goal is to make MaraLink the go-to digital home for any neighborhood—simple, helpful, and community-first. And add working notifications
