Inspiration
We believe that a lot of people want to enjoy and experience owning a dog without actually owning one.
What it does
Mascota connects pet owners with local dog borrowers for walks.
How we built it
On Wednesday morning we collected information about all the available API's. Then, we begin brainstorming ideas to work on. Our initial idea was only to suggest information (pets) to people who wanted to adopt pets and suggest pet adoption facilities based on the user budget. Then the idea evolve to a mobile app that connects pet owners with local dog borrowers or just people want to enjoy the experience of owning a dog without actually owning one. If people love that experience of owning a dog then we suggest pet adoption facilities for them to adoption a dog.
Our backend development team Karan and Chi created our web API using the Flask web framework. Using the PetFinder API to find pets and their adoption centers, we created a wrapper for our application to easily access pulled data.
Challenges we ran into
We arrived to San Fransisco without an idea that was our initial challenge. We knew that we wanted to build something great, something that could hopefully people help humanity,
Integrating API's was another challenge for us. Chi and Karan our backend developers worked all Thursday night and Friday morning to make sure all the endpoints were done properly. Karan had to make a wrapper around the Pet Finder API's. Our frontend developers Pride and Sana worked so hard as well on Thursday night and Friday morning to make sure the UI function properly.
Accomplishments that we are proud of
We are proud that we manage to build a functional and beautiful Product (MVP) in a short period of time, although we had no experience working as a team.
What we learned
We learned that when making a product the overall development process goes smoothly if there's is good communication in the team. It is extremely important to communicate with your team as much as possible in order to build a successful MVP. We also learn that identify a problem then coming up with a solution/idea for that specific user is the best approach to build a product.
What's next for Mascota
We will validate this initial assumption with pet owners and pet borrowers within the next couple days. We will interview at least 30 users: 15 pet owners and 15 pet borrowers.
After validating our idea we will make available a Beta version of the mobile app for users.
