Inspiration
My inspiration for this project was helping Hispanic college students who struggle to understand mathematics due to a lack of English. During my math tutor job at college, I helped everyone and noticed students had goals and put so much effort into preparing for math classes. Based on all of this, I use my knowledge of mathematics to create something that will benefit them and support their learning journey to successful grades.
What it does
Math App is a platform that offers math support to college students. It contains math subjects from Algebra I to Differential Equations, inside each class, are all topics based on the university syllabus. It also engages students' learning environment by adding features such as forum, where students can post questions and can receive help from me or other students.
How we built it
I built it first by creating a Django project, then I could develop independent apps that contain specific features for better readability. Then, I configured project settings for deployment, and I used SQLite as the database. I connected everything to the project and created this platform.
Challenges we ran into
One of the challenges I ran into was learning Django for the first time, here I spent 20 hours every day for 4 weeks to master Django, and after studying documentation and different algorithms to add to views.py, I was able to create my first app which was the connection between the main page and the main section of subjects. After that, it became clear the path and easier to code.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
One accomplishment I am proud of is that I developed this application by myself. I designed everything, the architecture, the database, and the backend. Understanding was my success, and by trying many methods I came up with this unique math platform that was tested by 10 students and got all positive reviews.
What we learned
What I learned is that coding can provide help to people, I found a way in which I am experienced, and I am looking to improve my application (interfaces, backend, frontend). Another learning is that my app can be functional with English natives as well, some people struggle to understand Math and are unable to pay for tutors, so this app comes in handy.
What's next for Math Education
Whats next is exciting, I am developing new features throughout I was learning, and when this is completed, be open to all college students. Once this app has been tested in college, make adjustments and launch it to other colleges. The goal is to learn within a friendly environment.
