Inspiration
We were inspired by stories from college students who are living away from home and want to start cooking for themselves but are sometimes too caught up with work to plan their meals. Our focus was to create a website that will help college students have an easy experience of finding healthy and delicious meals.
During our brainstorming process, our team decided to focus on college students’ quality of meals. After doing some research, we found that according to a study from the US national library of medicine, out of the 303 university students, almost 75% of students reported eating meals regularly, though only about half of the students have three meals a day.
Despite having a majority of students having regular meals, eating unhealthily is still a major concern. Having a balanced diet can help students increase energy levels, promote a functioning immune system, improve their ability to cope with stress, and even increase concentration and performance in school. For this reason, our solution is to create a well-rounded accessible web application for students to find easy food to make and schedule their time to make it in a heartbeat.
What it does
Meal Feeds allows college students who want to practice cooking for themselves as a life skill, recommending customized meals, while also helping them save money from buying store-bought food. Meal Feeds allow users to plan their meals ahead of time, collect grocery lists, and send out reminders for users to get groceries.
How we built it
Meal Feed was built fully using:
- HTML
- CSS
- JavaScript
Challenges we ran into
As four individuals with great enthusiasm and energy, we used a lot of time figuring out which idea we would like to settle on. Below are some of the challenges we ran into:
- Lack of back-end knowledge
- Unbalanced mixtures of hackers with different levels on the team
- Time Management; though we went into completion at the end, job assigning and actually executing into the working stage took us quite some time`
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Successfully launch our website to most functionality
- Executed our initial design to 90% accuracy
What we learned
- How to use and apply HTML, CSS, AND JavaScript efficiently and achieve the designs and purpose of Meal Feed.
- As a team, we also learned to resolve issues and come up with backups; we also learned to communicate and voice out our ideas and suggestions on Figma
What's next for Meal Feed
Meal Feed is also working on future updates, providing three new features. The first feature will allow users to calculate their calorie intake based on their daily meals. The next feature will allow users to rate and review menus they have tried from our site. This feature will help Meal Feed give better recommendations for other users. The third feature is connecting with friends on Meal Feed, which will allow friends to see each other’s meal plans and recommend new menus. This feature will encourage existing users to invite their friends and family to engage with the app—the more, the merrier!
