About MealNet
Did You Know?
Approximately one-third of all food produced globally is wasted, representing nearly $1 trillion in lost value every year.
At the same time, millions of people face food insecurity, struggling to access fresh, nutritious meals.
What Inspired Us
Seeing the scale of both food waste and hunger moved us to find a solution that could bridge the gap between surplus and need.
We asked ourselves:
"What if we could build a simple, secure, and community-driven platform to rescue food before it’s wasted — and deliver it to those who need it most?"
From that vision, MealNet was born.
How We Built MealNet
We developed MealNet as a prototype platform focused on connecting key participants:
- Food suppliers (restaurants, grocers, food manufacturers)
- Food banks and distribution centers
- Individuals seeking food assistance
- Volunteers willing to transport and deliver food
Our platform includes features such as:
- Easy surplus listing for suppliers
- Real-time need signaling for food banks
- Volunteer task browsing and verification with QR codes
- Impact tracking (meals saved, CO₂ prevented)
- Secure user authentication with Auth0 encryption protocols
MealNet not only facilitates logistics, but also builds trust through strong verification and security systems, ensuring that every donation reaches its intended destination.
Challenges We Faced
Building MealNet wasn't without obstacles:
- Matching timing and logistics: Food is perishable, so matching donors, recipients, and volunteers efficiently was critical.
- Data privacy: Protecting sensitive data while keeping the platform easy to use required robust backend security measures.
- User experience: Designing a system that served businesses, individuals, volunteers, and organizers — all with different needs — took extensive testing and iteration.
- Building community trust: We needed a verification system (QR codes, 8-digit codes) to ensure safe and verified handoffs at every stage.
Despite these challenges, we stayed focused on our mission:
To reduce food waste, fight hunger, and build stronger, more sustainable communities.
Our Vision
MealNet is still in early development, but our dream is clear:
A future where no good food goes to waste and everyone has access to a healthy meal.
We proudly support several UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including Zero Hunger, Good Health and Well-being, Sustainable Cities and Communities, and Climate Action.
We invite you to be part of this movement —
Reduce Food Waste. Feed Communities. Join MealNet.
