Inspiration
We were inspired by the growing complexity and lack of transparency in medical and dental billing. Consumers often face overcharges or errors, and many struggle to negotiate with healthcare providers. We wanted to create a tool that empowers people to understand their bills, spot discrepancies, and take action.
What it does
MedBill Analyzer compares user-provided medical and dental bills against publicly available pricing data (like Medicare and hospital prices). It detects overcharges, billing errors, and generates negotiation scripts to help users save money.
How we built it
We used the Apify platform and built scrapers to pull pricing data from Medicare, dental fee schedules, and hospital transparency files. We integrated the Anthropic Claude API for AI-driven extraction of procedure codes from bills and developed algorithms for error detection and bill analysis.
Challenges we ran into
One challenge was ensuring the accuracy and completeness of the pricing data, especially for diverse medical and dental services. Scraping multiple sources required handling inconsistencies and dealing with various formats.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We successfully built an actor that automates the comparison of medical bills with real market rates. The integration of AI to extract codes and the creation of negotiation scripts are features we're especially proud of, as they provide real value to users.
What we learned
We learned the importance of combining AI, web scraping, and data analysis to provide actionable insights. Handling different data formats and ensuring the accuracy of scraped data were key learning points in building a reliable tool.
What's next for MedBill Analyzer
Next, we plan to expand our data sources, improve the AI’s ability to detect billing issues, and enhance the user experience with a more interactive interface. We aim to add support for additional healthcare providers and make MedBill Analyzer even more comprehensive in assisting users with their medical billing challenges.
