Inspiration
The covid pandemic has devastated the whole world; at the moment India is facing a particularly challenging second wave. With the exponential increase in new cases of covid requiring hospital admission, multiple hospitals have been forced to the brink of collapse due to a severe lack of medical oxygen. The situation has deteriorated to the point that hospitals are being forced to seek help on social media. In times of shortage, a number of major private sector manufacturing companies are repurposing their factories to manufacture medical oxygen. What’s left to be done is to connect these new suppliers of oxygen to the hospitals with the greatest need for them in the most efficient way possible to save as many lives as possible. That’s where MediConnect comes in. . .
How it works
Check out our video explaining how it works. https://youtu.be/9FY4ckLaVVA
What it does
MediConnect is a website that connects a hospital to a supplier that is not only nearby but also has sufficient oxygen to meet their demands and are not being competed for by other nearby hospitals so as to saturate one supply. . .basically an uber for oxygen!
Challenges we ran into
Working across several timezones! Being asked to work on areas we haven't before. . .this gave us the opportunity to repurpose our existing skills and learn how to do something totally novel under time pressure!
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Working across three very different time zones to create a solution to an important real world problem!
What's next for MediConnect
- To take MediConnect to the next stage where it could start being useful in the real world, we would need to gain a more complete dataset of suppliers and hospitals, we will create a space for new suppliers to register and be incorporated into this database so their oxygen can be used.
- Currently the radius is 10km but we plan to incorporate existing train networks so that we can optimally make use of the resources on the ground to connect suppliers to hospitals further afield.
- We created this project to help with the immediate pandemic situation but this idea can be expanded into a long term solution for example to connect pharmacies that are running out of certain drug supplies to each other/supplier companies. . .
