Inspiration

From personal experience, dealing with even the most common conditions is difficult. A big part of this is understanding what your condition is. So, we were inspired to create a game-like learning experience for those with common medical conditions such as asthma or diabetes. Our approach was heavily influenced by the flash card learning methodology, which is one of the most efficient and digestible ways to learn.

What it does

MediLingo is a gamified platform that helps users learn about specific medical conditions in an easily digestible format. It features interactive lessons and resources about various health conditions, starting with asthma. The lessons are structured in a way that makes complex medical information accessible and engaging.

How we built it

We developed this application using the MERN stack architecture. On the Frontend, we utilized React and TypeScript to build out the UI, and used Clerk for the authentication and authorization. For the Backend, we utilized JavaScript, Node, and Express to build out a simple server that communicates with a MongoDB database. We then implemented a RESTful API to connect the Frontend and Backend.

Challenges we ran into

There were many technological challenges. Not everyone on the team is experienced with the MERN stack or even using JavaScript or TypeScript. Despite this learning curve, we were still successfully able to complete the project.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We were able to build out a full-stack web application in less than two days that works and has a working question set for Asthma.

What we learned

This weekend was full of informational lectures that really opened our eyes to areas of improvement in the medical industry, and what the professions are lacking. There were so many paths to choose from that we were not aware were a problem, such as patient literacy and engagement. Aside from this, we learned how to give a great pitch through an event at the Hackathon, as well as multiple new technologies and languages like JavaScript and MongoDB.

What's next for MediLingo

We plan to expand our Asthma track to cover more complex topics and integrate more paths into our options. We hope to establish relationships with research institutions to better connect patients with clinical trials and continue improving MediLingo to make medical learning more accessible and engaging.
