Project: MelbMinds – AI-Powered Study Buddy Platform
Inspiration
For many international students, making friends and forming study groups at university can be difficult. Domestic students often already have networks from high school or childhood, while newcomers start from scratch. This gap can leave international students feeling isolated, which affects both their quality of life and their ability to study effectively.
As international students ourselves, we know firsthand how important community and group study can be. Studying with others not only makes learning faster but also improves motivation and well-being. Our project aims to bridge this gap.
What the Platform Does
Our website helps students – especially international students – connect with study buddies and groups that fit their learning style and vibe. AI plays a central role in making these connections meaningful and useful.
Key Features
AI Matching by Vibe & Subject
On the landing page, students can describe what they’re looking for – e.g., a chill group for Linear Algebra or a consistent study team for an entire semester. The AI suggests groups that match those preferences.Icebreaking Support
Meeting new people can be awkward. The AI assistant, Leon, uses personal interests to spark conversations (e.g., “You both enjoy yoga – why not talk about that?”). This helps groups form bonds faster.Cultural Bridge
Leon explains slang and cultural references (like “GOAT” or “bet”) so that international students aren’t left out of conversations.Study Materials Support
The AI can summarize shared files, generate notes, and create flashcards so new members can catch up quickly without overwhelming the group.Session Management
Groups can create and manage study sessions. Leon adapts to the context:- First session → icebreaking activities
- Before assignments → tailored prep plans
- Whole semester → study plan built from curriculum and key dates
- First session → icebreaking activities
Tech Stack
- Backend: Django
- Frontend: Next.js
- Database: SQL (planned)
- Hosting: Vercel (frontend), Railway (backend + database management)
- Media Creation: Whisk (for image and video generation)
What’s Next for MelbMinds
MelbMinds started at the University of Melbourne, but the challenges it tackles are global. Our next step is to expand to other universities, tailoring the platform to different courses and academic calendars. Over time, we aim to support more programs and even go international, with Leon adapting to new languages and cultures. The goal: make study groups and community support accessible to students everywhere.
Our project brings together community, culture, and study support in one place, with AI as the guide that makes it all work smoothly.
