Inspiration
Memes are the heartbeat of internet culture—spreading humor, commentary, and trends at lightning speed. Yet, there was no single place to both explore the stories behind the world’s most viral memes and actively participate in the fun. Inspired by the idea of mixing daily fortune-telling with meme discovery, we set out to build a platform that makes meme culture more accessible, interactive, and entertaining for everyone.
What it does
MemeHunt is an all-in-one meme discovery and creation platform. Users can instantly browse a waterfall of trending and classic memes, each accompanied by a bite-sized origin story. The standout feature is the “Meme Fortune Card,” which delivers a playful daily fortune inspired by a random meme. Users can remix memes with a drag-and-drop editor, choose from stylish presets, and export or share their creations. MemeHunt turns meme browsing into a creative, interactive experience.
How we built it
We built MemeHunt using React, TypeScript, and Tailwind CSS for a fast, responsive, and visually bold Y2K-inspired UI. The meme database is a curated collection of over 50 iconic formats, each researched for authenticity. Our editor leverages draggable text, customizable styles, and html2canvas for seamless export. The fortune feature combines randomization with engaging visuals, while the masonry layout ensures a dynamic, modern presentation.
Challenges we ran into
Achieving a playful, retro aesthetic without sacrificing usability required careful design choices. Implementing a responsive masonry grid for variable-length meme cards was technically challenging. Exporting fully customized meme cards as images involved overcoming browser CORS issues and ensuring layout fidelity. We also had to balance the randomness and delight of daily fortunes with meaningful, meme-based content.
Accomplishments that we’re proud of
We’re proud to have created a platform that’s both fun and functional—a place where users can learn about meme history, express their creativity, and share their results with the world. The seamless editing and export features, combined with the unique “Meme Fortune Card,” set MemeHunt apart from typical meme generators.
What we learned
We deepened our understanding of modern front-end frameworks, image rendering, and responsive design. Researching meme origins gave us new appreciation for internet history and the power of digital communities. We also learned how small design tweaks can make a big difference in user engagement and delight.
What’s next for MemeHunt
Next, we plan to integrate live social media feeds for real-time trending memes, add user accounts for saving and sharing favorites, and expand the meme database with community submissions. We’re also exploring AI-powered meme generation and more interactive daily experiences to keep MemeHunt fresh and fun for everyone.
