Inspiration

  1. My grandfather started showing signs of dementia around 5 years ago, and he was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s shortly after. I witnessed his cognitive decline these last few years, as he slowly forgot his friends and family, lost track of the passage of time, and became confused with simple tasks. Currently, a caregiver assists him on weekdays, but he still often misses his medication.
  2. Studies show that the prevalence rate of Alzheimer’s disease has been rising.

What it does

Memory Management helps individuals with dementia and their caregivers to plan and carry out daily tasks. A structured day not only reduces agitation and improves mood, but also helps them stay mentally and socially engaged. Developing a routine for taking the medication helps the individual to safely manage their medication, reducing the risk of medication-related problems.

How we built it

Based on what we learned in Professor Hickey's Web App Development course over the summer, we used Node.js, Express, MongoDB, HTML, CSS to create the web app.

Challenges we ran into

We had lots of trouble with allowing users to login with the Google authentication, this was eventually resolved. We also had trouble figuring out how to make sure the client’s medical information is safe, but still wanting to allow interaction between the users.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of the progress we have made in this hackathon given the short amount of time. We are also proud of the idea of helping individuals with Alzheimer's visualize their daily care plan and medication, since this gives them a clear perspective of their daily routines and structure.

What we learned

Other than learning and developing new technical skills such as more functionality of MongoDB and Node.js, we also learned a lot about Alzheimer's disease, not only its symptoms but also its treatment options and prevention tactics.

What's next for Memory Management

  1. Keep information secure, especially the medication
  2. Notification for times to do an activity or take medication
  3. Allow access for their caregivers so that they can also help structure their daily plans and manage their medication
  4. Social engagement opportunities for individuals with Alzheimer's disease
  5. Allow individuals to set goals for themselves in the daily care plan, organizing more mentally challenging activities and social opportunities
