Inspiration

Taken from the age old saying “[insert name] was here”, our inspiration comes from the timeless human impulse to connect, express, and leave our mark on the world. Whether it's through graffiti, wishing trees, names carved into bark, or messages cast into the sea, we’re drawn to mediums that allow us to share our stories, emotions, and aspirations with others. MemoTrail channels this universal impulse into a digital platform, where one can leave their mark on the world as well as explore it through a new lens.

What it does

MemoTrail is a mobile-first web app that uses augmented reality to enhance the way users interact with their surroundings, overlaying digital information onto the physical world in real-time. The app lets you leave heartfelt messages (or silly ones) and discover hidden messages tied to specific locations. Simply tap the screen to make a memo at your desired location. As you walk around it will stay marked in that place and anyone using the app can view it as they walk by!

How we built it

We used React, Tailwindcss, Python, Flask, Postgres, and A Frame to build our project. A Frame was a huge pain and honestly every web AR framework was either blocked behind a paywall and inability to develop locally or was really hard to use or BOTH.

Challenges we ran into

Using AR on the web was a HUGE HUGE HUGE pain and in the end we struggled to get it working to our standards.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Our design is pretty awesome (totally not coming from the designer). Also, besides for the AR wackiness we were able to build a nice looking and functional app! We were able to get users to input memos, create local accounts, view messages, as well as even get location data with the memos. If were able to use AR.js with a better library for geolocation this project would be incredible doable and functional.

What we learned

AR is hard.

What's next for MemoTrail

Making things more efficient for varying devices. Getting better GEO location to be able to walk around and see other users notes
