Inspiration
Men experience the same depth of emotions as women but are often less expressive due to social expectations and stigma around vulnerability. Many mental health tools don’t account for that, they feel impersonal, overly emotional, or disconnected from how men actually communicate. We wanted to create a space where men feel safe to open up, reflect honestly, and receive practical suggestions that genuinely help them work through negative feelings.
What it does
MEN-TAL is a mental health tracker designed for men. It allows users to log their emotions and daily activities quickly through categorized drop-down options across six key areas. This makes journaling fast and effortless, even for busy users who don’t usually write full entries. Based on their inputs, the app provides personalized suggestions to help manage negative emotions and encourage healthier coping habits.
How we built it
We designed the interface in Figma for a clean, masculine aesthetic, then developed the front end using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. Firebase handles user authentication and data storage for journal entries and suggestions.
Challenges we ran into
Finding the right tone and design balance, approachable but not soft, supportive but not preachy, was tricky. We also had to streamline the data flow between check-ins, journaling, and suggestion generation.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We built a fully functional prototype that feels authentic and comfortable for male users. The interface looks cohesive, and the journaling flow makes emotional tracking simple and private.
What we learned
Designing for emotional accessibility isn’t just about features, it’s about trust and tone. We learned how language, colors, and layout can shape comfort and encourage honesty.
What's next for MEN-TAL
We plan to integrate AI-powered insights to identify emotional patterns, add community support features, and release a mobile version so men can check in anywhere, anytime.
