Inspiration

Nowadays, we see that youngsters are losing interest in reading newspapers and relying on digital media-based news and information. One reason may be that it is more intriguing and straightforward. So, we decided to go back and bring back the hype of newspapers that lie in melancholy around the corner of our house

What it does

METANEWS is an android app, that gives a reader, a more immersive experience of visualizing what actually is happening around the world. You may hover over any news article present in the newspaper and get a visual augmented over it which is related to the news, and tada! we have a dynamic newspaper! It also has a feature for gifts and rewards, wherein you can view ads of the newspaper augmented on them and anyone who watches these gets a reward that can be claimed as a voucher, or a scratch card - similar to YouTube ads, but with a twist! The news that you see in the app, can also be shared with your friends, colleagues, and relatives by connecting your socials.

How we built it

We built Metanews on the Unity engine, and the information augmented on the articles is fetched from credible sources like YouTube and other mediums. We have used Zappar for the functioning of Augmenting the virtual elements over the newspaper articles. Our app is currently marker based, where we have used images from the articles to view For creating ads, we built 3D models using a blender, animated the objects using blender and unity, and used many online websites for downloading images, Textures, models, etc.

Challenges we ran into

It was a journey of hard work and dedication as well as fun. We ran into many problems regarding image detection in this new SDK as we were not familiar with it. Time was a crucial problem in our project.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We have completed this project and integrated all the features which we imagined for our project. This is our greatest achievement.

What we learned

We learned teamwork and Collaboration, hard work and imagination. That’s not all, we also came to learn about many new software and about new features of already known software. And finally, we also learnt the actual value of time and team.
