Inspiration

In the town we live in, Immokalee, a large part of the population is migrant workers that only speak Spanish and no English. The problem with having this is that people can't communicate efficiently with others who only speak English in the community. For example when they go to the doctor, go to a school meeting, or need things such as directions they need a translator but that person isn't always available.

What it does

The App translates spoken or typed English into Spanish and spoken or typed Spanish into English.

How I built it

Using the Yandex Translator on MIT App Inventor.

Challenges I ran into

The most difficult part was designing a good, clean, and simple user interface for all the users. Another challenge is that the Yandex Translator sometimes makes mistakes in translations.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

We are proud of the way that our app turned out because we put many hours into the development.

What I learned

We learned that barriers and challenges in our community are able to be overcome.

What's next for Mi Amiga

The next steps for Mi Amiga are to: 1) Explain to users how the app can be used to learn Spanish or English, and 2) Expand the app to include other languages, like French or German
