Inspiration
Do you remember when you were are freshman at Mines, looking at your schedule and wondering "where the heck is MC213?". If somebody is lost or new to campus, there are not many ways to find your way around, especially indoors.
What it does
Mines Map is an interactive map where you can see inside of buildings, search for specific rooms, and take a peek inside. You can also see information about events happening in certain rooms. This is all packaged into a sleek, modern, and easy-to-use website.
How we built it
Most of the maps were modeled in Blender utilizing various data sources, then rendered in ThreeJS with the SolidJS framework. Events are can be loaded through the Mines Event Management Software API, and we obtained photos for the indoor view from a 360° camera.
Challenges we ran into
One of our biggest challenges was making a website that is intuitive and accessible. It was also challenging to make a data-rich map that was also aesthetic and people would actually use.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of our ability to collaborate and successfully combine so many features together into one cohesive website.
What we learned
None of our team are primarily front-end developers, and this is a largely front-end focused project, so it has been a great learning experience. Most of our frameworks were also new to us, so we learned a lot about ThreeJS, SolidJS, Tailwind CSS, and reverse-engineering.
What's next for Mines Map
There are many things that can be improved, and we believe that this project has a lot of potential to be used by real people.
