Inspiration:
We were inspired by our personal experiences during the pandemic, where we noticed how many people were struggling to take proper care of themselves. The isolation, stress, and uncertainty took a toll on mental and physical well-being, and we realized that there was a gap in how people were prioritizing self-care. This observation sparked our desire to create a solution that would help individuals reconnect with themselves and focus on their well-being in a more mindful, accessible way.
What it does
Mokia is designed to guide individuals on their self-care journey by offering personalized routines, mental health support, and physical well-being tips. It helps users build a daily habit of self-care, providing tools for reflection, stress relief, and overall better health practices.
How we built it
We built Mokia using Java, with multiple classes that were eventually linked together in one big GUI class. We utilized GUI and Swing to create a user-friendly interface that allowed users to navigate easily and interact with various features of the app. Each class contributed to different functionalities, like tracking progress, offering recommendations, and storing user data, all integrated into the main GUI class for a seamless experience.
Challenges we ran into
One of the biggest challenges we faced was integrating the code from me and my partners into one cohesive working project. Each of us had different pieces of functionality, and making sure everything came together without conflicts or bugs required careful planning and coordination.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We’re proud that we were not afraid to ask for help when we needed it. We reached out to three different mentors, all of whom provided valuable guidance and helped us improve our work significantly. We also had the opportunity to meet new people and build connections. As beginners, we’re proud of the fact that we ended up with a code that we are both satisfied with. It was a huge accomplishment to see our project come together after all the challenges.
What we learned
We learned multiple technical skills throughout this project, such as live sharing and importing code to GitHub, which helped us work more efficiently as a team. We also both extended our knowledge in GUI development and object-oriented coding, particularly working with classes and objects. These skills have made us more confident in our ability to tackle complex coding challenges in the future. We also came to realize how willing people are with helping and how effective a supportive community is.
What's next for Mokia
Looking ahead, we want to add more recipes to help users with meal planning, and introduce a feature where users can chat with an AI for personalized self-care advice. We also plan to add a feature for finding and adding friends, creating a community aspect within the app. Additionally, we’re aiming to make the pet feature more customizable, allowing users to personalize their experience even further.
