Inspiration
Our team was lucky enough to have started our journey at Monash University in 2019 when the campus was full of life and activity. Every day people from all over the world would gather together on campus to talk and engage in activities based on their shared interests. Whether it be academic clubs like the Monash Engineering Student Society or social clubs like the Monash Disney Society, campus was the main meeting place for all us students. However, after 2 years of on and off lockdowns this spirit of campus life has dwindled, which is why we created UniMaps to reignite that fire!
What it does
UniMaps simply shows students all the events happening on campus both in real-time and events that will take place in the future as well. Clubs have the ability to log in to their account and drop pins onto the map for future events. All other users can simply open the map and view everything their uni has to offer, without the need to log in!
How we built it
Backend: Express and NodeJs Database: Created using Text Files (as a key-value store) Frontend: React and Chakra UI
Challenges we ran into
- Gaps in skillsets amongst the team, such that languages and frameworks one member was proficient in others were not
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- We built a beautiful prototype on Figma
- We began creating a functioning web app that clubs and students can begin using soon!
What we learned
- We learned how to develop an MVP very quickly
- Learnt how to prioritize functionality
- Learnt how to work well in a team with differing skillsets
What's next for Monash Maps
- Build a react-native mobile application as we believe this will increase uptake of our service
- Reach out to clubs to get them to start using our service
- Market our service to uni students so that they can benefit from our app
Built With
- chakraui
- express.js
- jsonfile
- node.js
- react
