Inspiration

Every year, hundreds of thousands of Muslims perform Hajj as a religious duty. Despite tremendous advancements and huge support by the Saudi Government, it is still a problem for many pilgrims to perform their rituals as they are meant to be fulfilled. Furthermore, due to the huge real estate and crowd, many people still get lost as they get separated from their groups, and it takes an extreme mental toll on them till the time they are not reunited with their team. These problems have motivated us to use technology in order to help the pilgrims throughout their journey for both the correct performance of rituals and to stay connected with their groups at all times to prevent getting lost.

What it does

Al-Morshid is an AI-Powered solution built for smartphones that helps people in the performance of their rituals (Ru'kn) as well as to keep a track of all group members at any given point in time. This is done through tracking the time, place, and actions of each individual and then remotely guiding them if they perform any mistake. This is done through Machine Learning which is previously taught to recognize each action, and its time so that it can correct the pilgrim if they are at fault. Furthermore, it allows the individual members of the group to stay connected with each other at all times, without letting any member from outside the group track them. allowing for inter-group privacy while allowing effective intra-group communication.

How we built it

We leveraged the cutting-edge technology of Artificial Intelligence combined with sophisticated Software Development to build a smart app that performs the functions mentioned above.

Challenges we ran into

Building AI into a mobile app, and executing it on the edge is a problem that we majorly faced. Additionally, building a suitable business model that is not a problem for the user to pay while ensuring that it generates sufficient revenue for the team running the solution is not easy. However, with contributions from each member, we were able to overcome these challenges.

What we learned

Working as a team makes the impossible look possible, and building solutions in a small period of time is only possible if the whole team is dedicated and ready to support each other member.

What's next for Al-Morshid (The Hajj Companion)

We intend to make the system, even more, user-friendly and increase the efficiency and performance of our AI models by collecting more data. Then, we intend to make this system available for the Umrah pilgrims as well.
