Inspiration

If more people walked or biked instead of driving, our cities would be much cleaner. Not only would walking or biking reduce pollution, but it is also a fun activity! This is what inspired us to build MoveMates, where we hope to incentivize people to walk or bike instead of driving.

What it does

MoveMates is an application that encourages people to walk or bike instead of driving. There are challenges and rewards in the app. Challenges include but are not limited too, walking a certain amount of steps, biking a certain amount of miles, etc. The more challenges a user completes, the more points they will be able to redeem for a reward. A user can redeem an award at a local business that wants to encourage the use of environment-freindly methods of transpiration, by offering discounted/free items for those that have enough points from their walking or biking.

How we built it

We built MoveMates using a tech stack that includes:

  • Frontend: React native
  • Backend: Node.js
  • Database: Firestore database

Challenges we ran into

During the development process, we encountered several challenges:

  • since this was our team's first time making a mobile app, we encountered many setbacks such as trouble with styling the front-end.
  • We had trouble connecting the map to the user's live location.
  • Developing a points redeem system for users.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of several key accomplishments:

  • Successfully creating a mobile application to achieve the purpose it was designed for.
  • connecting a database to the react-native front end.
  • developing a well-designed front-end interface.
  • Utilizing a map feature that tracks a user location's live.
  • completing the app within the given timeframe.

What we learned

Throughout the development of MoveMates, we learned:

  • The importance of user feedback in shaping the development process.
  • The importance of collaborating with teammates.
  • The fundamentals of mobile web-development. ## What's next for MoveMates Looking ahead, we plan to:
  • machine learning and AI integration to provide the most efficient routes.
  • train our AI models to find the most optimized routes in each city.
  • Expand our application to reach a broader audience.
