mug404: My School Buddy
Inspiration
We are all students. In our daily lives, we've come to rely heavily on AI tools like ChatGPT to find quick answers and complete tasks. However, this convenience often comes at the cost of genuine learning and critical thinking. We realized that while these tools are excellent for providing information, they can inadvertently make us lazy. Our inspiration for mug404 was to flip this script. Instead of using AI as a crutch, we wanted to create a tool that uses AI as a challenger, a personal "sparring partner" to deepen understanding and encourage independent thought. Our goal is to transform AI from a shortcut into a catalyst for true academic growth.
What it does
mug404 is an AI-powered educational platform that goes beyond simple answer-giving. It's a comprehensive "School Buddy" designed to help students master subjects, particularly in essay writing and problem-solving.
- Writing Coach: Students can upload their essays, and mug404 provides a detailed analysis. Instead of just correcting mistakes, it gives a score and highlights strengths and areas for improvement, such as a lack of a strong thesis or weak transitions. It then suggests specific strategies to refine their work, effectively coaching them to become better writers.
- Snap & Solve: For subjects like Mathematics, Economics, or Sciences, students can upload a photo of a question. The app breaks down the problem into a step-by-step solution, explaining the underlying concepts rather than just providing the final answer.
- Test Yourself!: After a problem is solved or an essay is analyzed, mug404 generates an interactive pop quiz with similar questions and concepts to test the student's understanding. This feature ensures that the student has truly learned the material and isn't just copying solutions.
By forcing students to engage with the material and justify their understanding, mug404 turns passive consumption of information into an active, challenging learning process.
How we built it
We built mug404 as a modern, scalable web application, prioritizing a seamless user experience and robust backend functionality.
- Frontend: The user interface was developed using Next.js, which provides a fast, responsive, and dynamic experience for students on both desktop and mobile devices. We focused on a clean, intuitive design, taking inspiration from platforms like ChatandBuild, to ensure the learning tools are easy to navigate. The frontend is deployed with Vercel for automatic scaling and zero-downtime deployments.
- Backend: The core logic, including our custom AI models for content analysis and quiz generation, is containerized using Docker. This allows us to easily manage dependencies and deploy our services consistently. For the hackathon, we have integrated with Huawei Cloud, hosting our Docker containers on their Elastic Container Service (ECS). This not only provides us with a stable, high-performance environment but also qualifies us for the Sponsor Prize.
- AI Models: The AI is not a single black-box model. We use a combination of different models, with the Gemini API powering the core analytical and content generation features for the writing coach and step-by-step solutions. We also use custom-tuned models for specific subjects to ensure the feedback and quizzes are accurate and relevant to the Singapore MOE syllabus.
Challenges we ran into
One of the biggest challenges was shifting the paradigm of AI from a solution-provider to a problem-poser. We had to carefully design the prompts and the AI's response logic to avoid it simply giving away answers. We faced difficulties in refining the natural language processing to provide targeted, constructive feedback for essays without sounding generic. Additionally, integrating the various services, from the image-to-text functionality for "Snap & Solve" to the containerized backend on Huawei Cloud, required meticulous configuration and testing to ensure all parts of the application worked together seamlessly.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are most proud of successfully building a working prototype that genuinely fulfills our core mission: to make AI a challenging tool for learning. The "Test Yourself!" feature is a key accomplishment, as it validates the student's understanding and closes the learning loop, proving that our approach works. We're also proud of our team's collaboration and the successful deployment on Huawei Cloud, demonstrating our ability to work with modern cloud infrastructure and meet the hackathon's technical requirements.
What we learned
We learned a great deal about the nuances of educational technology and the responsibility of building AI for students. We discovered that a well-designed AI in education is less about providing the "right" answer and more about asking the "right" questions. We gained hands-on experience in containerization with Docker and cloud deployment on Huawei Cloud, which are invaluable skills. This project has shown us that the most impactful solutions often come from redefining the relationship between the user and the technology.
What's next for mug404
Looking ahead, we have a clear roadmap for scaling mug404 and enhancing its features.
- Expansion of Features: We plan to add a new "Writing Coach for Universities" feature, extending our essay analysis capabilities to cater to the more complex, research-heavy writing required in tertiary education.
- Gamification: To make learning more engaging, we will introduce gamified elements like achievement badges, leaderboards, and personalized study streaks to encourage consistent use.
- School Integration: Our goal is to partner with more educational institutions to integrate mug404 directly into their learning management systems, offering a Schools plan with a 10% discount as per our business model. This would enable teachers to track student progress and tailor their lessons based on data-driven insights from the app.
- Scaling and Monetization: We will continue to expand our user base with a freemium model (Free tier with basic features and a $19/month Premium tier for advanced tools), aiming to capture our initial Serviceable Obtainable Market (SOM) of $216K in the first two years. We will leverage Huawei Cloud's scalable infrastructure to handle increasing user demand efficiently.
